Bio:
Judge Ortiz was appointed by Governor Richardson in November 2005. He was elected in 2006 and retained in 2008 and 2014. From 2005 to 2010 he was a family court judge. He moved to the civil docket in 2010 and has been there since. He has been the Chief Judge since 2012.
Before law school, Judge Ortiz spent a year as a social worker in Costa Rica. He was the President of the NM Hispanic Bar Association from 1989 to 1990. He has served as a board member for various children related organizations.
Education:
Judge Ortiz received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in English Language and Literature/Letters in 1975. He received his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall) in 1980.
Work history:
Prior to his appointment, Judge Ortiz spent 20 years in private practice with a focus on personal injury and commercial litigation (at Roth, VanAmberg, Rogers & Ortiz from 1985-2005). Judge Ortiz clerked for Justice Sosa at the NMSC from 1983-1985.
